Vibrant and often abstract, I draw on my South African Heritage and influences from First Nations art styles where the natural world is ever present, to produce bold, interpretative imagery alive with colour and movement.
I earned my Fine Arts degree at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, where my senses were overwhelmed by the African landscape with its bright light and blazing colour. Leaving South Africa in 1968 for a suburb of Tokyo, I studied pottery and clay glazing in the workshops of local Japanese potters. I loved the juxtaposition of pattern, texture, and colour that the Japanese are so masterful in exploring. After a year in the Far East, I moved to the North of England, where I taught art to primary school children for a number of years before moving to Montreal, Canada. I joined artists’ workshops at the Visual Arts Centre in Montreal, studying life drawing, silver jewelry making and the intricacies of Inuit weaving techniques.
I left Canada in the 1980's for a sojourn in Israel before moving to London with my husband and children. How exhilarating to live in London with no end of exhibitions, vernissages and theatre which I explored to the full. On arriving in Florida some years ago I was immediately transported back to my South African childhood of intense light and colour which I try to infuse into my paintings. I like to think that my experience of living in so many countries and my passion for form and colour is reflected in my art.
I live in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and work with some wonderful and inspiring artists. I am a member of the Palm Beach Watercolour Society and my paintings have been displayed in juried exhibitions at the Coral Springs Art Center, in the Gold Coast Watercolour Society and ArtServe. I have regularly exhibited and won prizes at the annual CVE art Show. I have had exhibitions in South Africa, London, and most recently in Parma, Italy.
